CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a component of beef and milk that has been shown to decrease body fat in both humans and animals. CLA is necessary for the transportation of dietary fat into cells, where it is used to build up muscle and produce energy. Primarily, we get CLA from beef and milk products. However, as Americans become more health conscious, they are decreasing their beef and whole milk intake.
Accordingly, the amount of CLA in their diets is decreasing. Even when they eat beef and milk, today's products contain less and less CLA. This is a result of fat reduced milk and modern cows being CLA deficient (cows mainly eat grass, which grows in nutrient deficient soil and is sprayed with pesticides, leaving it low amounts of CLA; in turn, the cows ingest CLA reduced grass and produce their own CLA deficient muscle).
Without sufficient amounts of this fat-reducing nutrient, an epidemic of overweight people of all ages now exists. Previous generations often ate foods with a higher percentage of dietary fats, even more than modern overweight people. However, our ancestors consumed beef and milk that was not CLA deficient. Therefore, the CLA that they ate was able to metabolize the large amount of fats they ingested.
